The Office of Rail and Road has rejected plans for direct train services from London to Wrexham and Rochdale, citing insufficient capacity on the west coast mainline. The regulator also vetoed an additional Blackpool service for the same reason. The ORR stated that "significant pressure" on the crowded route left no room for the new trains to the capital.
The decisions affect three separate service proposals. Wrexham and Rochdale would each have received dedicated direct connections to London, while Blackpool would have gained an extra service on an existing route. All three were refused on grounds of space constraints rather than cost or technical feasibility.
The west coast mainline is one of Britain's busiest rail corridors. The ORR's rejection indicates that adding even single new services to the line would require operational changes or displacement of existing traffic that the regulator deemed unacceptable.
