EU trade negotiators led by commissioner Maroš Šefčovič travel to China this week for talks aimed at limiting Chinese hybrid electric car exports to Europe, according to The Guardian.

Šefčovič and his team depart Wednesday for two days of negotiations scheduled to begin Thursday and continue through Friday. The talks target China's trade surplus with the EU, which The Guardian reports stands at £1 billion per day.

The negotiations centre on cheap hybrid electric vehicles from China flooding European markets. EU member states have hardened their demands for protection against these imports, The Guardian says, describing the mood in trade talks as having shifted.

A breakthrough deal would restrict Chinese hybrid car exports to Europe. The talks represent what negotiators characterise as a critical moment, with discussions scheduled to run late into Friday to reach an agreement.
